DHDC Nigeria, LASG Launch Out Skills Acquisition Programme To End Tuberculosis

In its efforts to support Nigeria’s commitment to the End TB Strategy and alleviate the economic burdens associated with tuberculosis (TB) treatment, the Debriche Health Development Centre (DHDCNigeria), in collaboration with the Lagos State (LASG) Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, proudly launches the OneImpact Nigeria Support Group Skill Acquisition Program.

In a Press Statement issued earlier today, by the DHDC Nigeria: “this initiative, with support from the Stop TB Partnership’s Challenge Facility for Civil Society OneImpact CLM project, aims to reduce catastrophic costs faced by TB people affected by TB by equipping them with essential vocational skills”.

Also, according to Mrs. Deboran Ikeh, a TB advocate, women’s emancipation and empowerment enthusiast, and Executive Director of DHDC, while speaking at the maiden edition said the initiative seeks to bridge health and promote economic empowerment.

“Despite Tuberculosis testing and treatment being free in Nigeria, people affected by TB still suffer catastrophic costs often leading to financial strain, compounded by stigma and loss of income during treatment.

“This program addresses these challenges by equipping participants with practical skills such as catering, shoemaking etc, helping them rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities.

“This initiative is not just about acquiring skills; it’s about restoring dignity, hope, and the courage to dream again. Every participant represents resilience, and we’re here to support them in transforming their challenges into opportunities. By tackling the economic barriers to TB treatment, we are making meaningful strides towards the global goal of ending TB.” she stressed.

Speaking at the event, Lagos State TB, Leprosy and Burulli Ulcer Control Programme Manager, Dr. Daniel Olusola Sokoya while applauding DHDC’s efforts said the program’s launch underscores a strong partnership with the Lagos State TB Programme of the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

“Debriche Health Development Centre has shown exemplary commitment to supporting people affected by TB in Lagos. This program not only empowers individuals but strengthens treatment adherence by addressing economic barriers.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Health remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting TB, and we will continue to promote initiatives that uplift communities and foster health and economic resilience.” Sokoya stated.

The event was held at the African Villa Resort, Egbeda, Lagos Nigeria.

Key Features of the Initiative are as follow:
● Vocational Training: Skills will provide a stepping stone for participants to achieve financial independence.
● Supportive Services: The program integrates emotional support, nutritional guidance, and strategies for managing health during treatment.
● Advancing the End TB Strategy: By reducing catastrophic costs and stigma, the program contributes to Nigeria’s TB reduction targets.
