It is about time we had a candid conversation about our so called “content creators” in Nigeria.
Yes, some of them are quite entertaining and help us relieve our day to day stress. However, I honestly think, all content creators that go too extreme on socials need to be checked.
Why do I say that? The level of falsehood and deceit in their contents just to trend and go viral is becoming too worrisome.
And I know I’m speaking the minds of tons of Nigerians right now on this subject matter.
Yes, I know anyone can defend them that that’s where they feed from, agreed! But why do they have to keep leading people on just to create contents that will trend on socials?
Like what happens to decent contents and videos that convey wholesome information??
Have they all ran out of ideas and creativity to the point that all of them have now resorted to deceptive and staged contents just to earn online? And to the detriment of unsuspecting online user’s mental health??
Often times than not, most of these contents appear too extreme to the point of risking their own lives and that of unsuspecting passerbyes/onlookers.
It has been said that once Nigerians jump on any trend they must overdo or abuse the trend.
Creating content should never be a life threatening or endangering anyone’s life before people can validate it as true event.
Due to this abuse on socials, people now find it hard to even believe true life incidents due to tons of prank videos posing as true happenings and by the time you discovered it was all staged you would just seem fooled by charlatans who want to keep making money off people’s guilibility.
And I think Nigerian Police are becoming aware of this and now taking it upon themselves to checkmate this awful trend online.
I recall a recent move by the Police where one of them had to be detained after causing panic attacks for those around while shooting his prank videos.
These set of online users are the reason I will eventually throw my weight behind the Social Media Regulation Bill so as to restore sanity back into the digital space.
This is because that’s exactly what I think is the solution we need right now, to keep the digital space safer and healthier for our mental health.
The desperation to be seen and known on socials is getting to a breaking point where all hands must be on deck before everything goes south.
It is true we live in an information age but we must ensure that the information we take in must also be decent and wholesome enough for our wellbeing.
We need to act fast before we lose it!
