“We take sides with the Indigents in the Society” – Andrew Mamedu, New Country Director of AAN

Andrew Mamedu, the new Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has reiterated that the organization will always be committed in protecting the interests of the poor and the less privileged in the country.

According to him, one of the core missions of the organization, is to collectively work with the government at all levels as well as other civil society groups in eradicating poverty amongst the people.

“Yes, we will always take sides with the poor. It is one of our core objectives as an organization – fighting for social justice to see that the poor and the marginalized citizens are given priority in the scheme of things”.

Mamedu stated this, at a Media Parley in Abuja held in honour of him and his Deputy heralding their arrival as the top executives of the international Organization.

The appointment of Mamedu, who succeeded the immediate past Country Director, Ene Obi was officially confirmed by the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Jummai Umar-Ajijola, during a press conference held in Abuja in late August 2023.

Speaking further at the media parley on the critical roles Media play in past Actionaid advocacies and campaigns, Mamedu said the contributions of the Media, being Fourth Estate of the Realm, by holding the government accountable and getting our advocacy messages across to these Duty Bearers can never be overemphasized.

“We shall continue to strengthen our relationship with the Media both in terms of collaboration and partnership. Media is critical to our social justice promotion at Actionaid Nigeria and we can never take your support for granted” he stated.

Mamedu, until his appointment as AAN Country Director this year, was the Director, Resource Mobilization and Innovation, and had previously worked in progressively higher capacities within ActionAid Nigeria, towards the realization of the organizations vision of eradicating poverty and promoting social justice.

Andrew is well-versed in the global political economy and aware of the socio-political environment in Nigeria and globally. Andrew has also worked with several development partners both at the bilateral and multilateral level.
