Amnesty International Sets to Launch 'Write for Rights' in Nigeria

Amnesty International will be launching its first edition of ‘Write for Rights’ event in Nigeria this December. The event which has been scheduled to kick-off on the 3rd – 17th December 2014 is expected to take place in two majors cities in Nigeria; Abuja and Lagos.

‘Write for Rights’ which started in 2001 by Al Poland. It became an annual global campaigning moment that Amnesty International has been using as an important tool for advocacy and to raise awareness against various forms of human rights abuses all over the world.

Over the years, the impact of this single event has been immeasurably. In 2013 alone, hundreds of thousands of people in 143 countries joined Write for Rights. They took a record breaking millions actions, including sending letters, signing petitions, tweets, email and SMS messages. These are people just like you and I said Moses Opiyo, Amnesty International, Regional Coordinator for Africa.

In Nigeria, lots of activities are lined up for this event. Wide range of issues bordering on human rights abuses such as torture, rights of physically challenged person, Sexual and reproductive rights, Child right among others will be addressed during the event, said Nature Obiakor, Amnesty International Activist.
