National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is set to commence the implementation of the National Generator Emission Control Programme (NGECP) across the 36 states of the federation.
The Director General/Chief Executive Officer NESREA, Dr Chidi Anukam while briefing the Pressmen yesterday in Abuja said the NGECP aimed at creating effective public awareness on indiscriminate and poorly use of generating sets in our homes and public places.
He also added that through the regulating process imbedded in the programme citizens would be made to be conscious of the negative impacts of carbonmonoxide emissions/Fumes from these generators on human lives.
“The programme becomes imperative so as to improve the air quality that we Nigerians inhale while going about our daily activities.
“When toxins from the generator fumes mixes with the oxygen we breath in it becomes toxic to our systems, and since humans have zero tolerance for carbonmonoxide it could lead to instant death” he remarked.
“By regulating the emissions from the generating sets means more lives will be saved from the toxic fumes and other safety measures such as regular servicing of generators, positioning and installation amongst other will be monitored through this programme” he affirmed.
Chidi while mentioning several other objectives of NGCEP stated that it will generate revenue and create employment opportunities for teeming job seekers in Nigeria as well as other opportunities for training and capacity building.
“This programme will be a revenue generating programme as owners of generators/ defaulters who fail to comply with the standard regulations with be made to pay”
“It will also create jobs opportunities for the Nigerians and opportunities for training and capacity development” he added.
He further added the NESREA will kick off the first phase of programme immediately in January 2019 beginning from Abuja before taking it to other states in Nigeria.
