On Wednesday 12th December 2018, six years after the United Nations unanimously endorsed universal health coverage, as part of the country-level events to mark the world Universal Health Coverage Day (#UHCDay2018), the West African Academy of Public Health (WAAPH), Innovations and Access for Development Initiative (Inovate2100) in collaboration with Health Sector Reform Coalition (HSRC) and other key stakeholders will hold a one-day Health Literacy Leadership course (HLLC) for young leaders on universal health coverage. This programme targeted at young leaders and journalists below 30 years of age, aims to build their understanding around the pillars of UHC and how to strengthen health literacy, so that they can become critical influencers, social commentators and advocates for strong public health programmes towards health for all in Nigeria and ultimately the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.
Engaging Emerging Youth Leaders…
The HLLC is an opportunity for young emerging public health leaders and journalists in early career or other health-related professionals with strong passion to be strong voices for the UHC movement through bringing their experience and passion to gain additional understanding to help grow health literacy as a pillar of public health education and information that can help accelerate the movement towards universal health coverage. The programme in 2018 will serve as a front runner training in preparation for the regional conference for UHC Action (Action 3.8 Conference). The successful participants of the course will be followed up in a cutting-edge 6-month mentorship programme and linkage notable leaders of public health.
The HLLC is a plugin academy to the UN Partnership for SDGs project called the West African Youths for SDG 3 campaign (WAY)1. The WAY Campaign is a West African – focused platform for young people (adolescents and youth) to advocate and engage on global health and health related sustainable development issues. The platform engenders action through individual and group feats, as well as through partnerships with other youth structures and key institutions at national and international levels. Individual membership is voluntary and drawn from all works of life, including sectors and collaborates with all key non-state actors that have a common vision.
HLLC programme offers an opportunity to fast-track young leaders’ public health careers and develop their evidence-based advocacy skills, health communication knowledge and baseline health literacy. All successful applicants will have the opportunity blog and advocate to parliamentarians and turn in a report after two months.

4. Health Risk Communication for UHC
5. Citizen Voice, Accountability and Citizen Journalism
6. Strategies for Effective CSO-Legislative Interface
Prerequisites for Participation
The ideal candidate should be:
o A Self -starter
o Committed to the advancement of public health advocacy
o Desirous for impact on health system
o A potential builder of new frontiers
o Able to generate original, relevant story ideas
o Fluent in written English and/or French plus an indigenous language (an asset)
o Proficient with data analysis
o Global and Pan-African outlook

Certificates will be issued by the West African Academy of Public Health (WAAPH) to all participants.
