What would you do if suddenly there is a knock on your door and next thing you see upon opening is your “used-to-be self-sufficient” neighbour standing before you, asking you to bail his/her family out of impending starvation? Would you complain that you are ‘rich’ like most Nigerians do? Or quickly dash into your pantry or store to bring some food items to save them? Apparently that question may seem too hard to answer for many who are probably feeling the pinch of ‘recession’ already. But remember the word used here “Used-to-be-self-sufficient” in other words, they were once a happy family not rich but they were well catered for by their earnings before the sudden heat of recession blew in their direction.
Cases of this sort abound everywhere in the country today due to sudden economic crunch- recession that recently hit our dear nation. 45 per cent employed Nigerians are having tough times maintaining their standard of living as a result of abnormal rising cost of living.
“Families who could afford three square meals before, now skip meals. Basic necessities such as exotic food, paying school fees, rent, medical bills are gradually becoming luxury of some sort. The landscape is rife with hunger, disappointment, anger, and even shame.” said Kenneth Ogbebor, Lead Initiator of Lighthouse Africa Christmas Initiative.
Ogbebor further declared that Lighthouse Africa as a Social Enterprise decided to tag this year Christmas Initiative ‘If You See Something,
Do Something” in order to inspire more of this initiative and support from other well-meaning Nigerians to combat issues of hunger and starvation within our immediate communities, which is only way we can be our brothers’ keepers.
‘Our target is to reach out to 1,000 families living within the suburbs of Federal Capital Territory such as Dutse, Kubwa, Mpape and Jahi areas with cash, foodstuff and gifts for Christmas” he alluded.
Dotun Roy, the Strategic and implementation officer for this noble initiative stated that LightHouse Africa team is currently identifying persons and families who are in this dismal state with the plans to support them through provision of basic food stuff and cash transfers to ensure that they have a splendid and unforgettable Christmas and New Year Celebrations.
“Distribution of these items to the qualified needy families will commence by 19th to 24th and the second batch will be from December 27-31st, 2016” he posited.
