Tabitha Cumi Foundation in partnership from Australian Aid has launched “Girls Safety Initiative” today 7th of August in Abuja. The initiative which aims at setting up Girls Clubs in five communities across the Federal Capital Territory that will support 300 girls and young women. The clubs is intended to provide girls with a safe place to grow, learn, have fun and develop confidence in themselves and their ability to make a difference in the world.
Tabitha Cumi Foundation is a non-governmental and non-profit organization committed to the implementation of projects and programmes that ensure safety, security, empowerment as well as general well being of young women both at the rural and urban communities in Nigeria.
In her opening remarks, Arch. Mrs. Adetayo, Executive Director, Tabitha Cumi Foundation, said the initiative was borne as a result of current state of insecurity in the country and young girls being the major vulnerable targets. “we must do everything within our capacities to insulate these young girls from unforeseen insecurity challenges” she alludes.
She further added that having gone through intense training on camp in last three day under this initiative, they have been inculcated with life building skills that would enable them to grow up and impart their immediate communities. These young girls were all presented with certificate of participation.
The Australian High Commission to Nigeria, Jonathan Richardson, who was also present at the event, said that the Government of Australia has steadfast and ongoing commitment to be at the forefront of women and girls empowerment through our development assistance program. “The right for girls to learn and develop in safety environment is one of the most basic ones we hold dear both in Australia and Nigeria explained by Ambassador Richardson who also doubles as one of the Foundation’s Girls Safety Ambassador.
Representatives from Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Education as well as Civil Society Organisations such as Civil Society Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA) and Radio personality, Popular Hembelembe Crooner, Ahmed Issa who also received an award for his unflinching support for girl child education in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
