As we are gathering momentum towards another election day on March 9th, it’s imperative we begin to itemise those critical issues that make life worth living and prioritise them.
Sadly, these critical issues are often perceived as inconsequential yet they are inevitably crucial to our overall well-being. One of them is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. – WASH.
Many of us often underestimate the essence of having efficient and effective WASH services delivered to the masses and citizens at the grassroots.
WASH services when adequately prioritised would have solved several other challenges such as unavailability of clean and potable water, access to basic hygiene and sanitation, open defecation, epidemic, rape, menstrual hygiene amongst teenage girls, gender-discrimation, low literacy level amongst the youth and many other issues and challenges arising from WASH in the 21st Century.
To put an end to all these above WASH issues in our various localities, it behoves on everyone to VOTE for WASH by engaging the political aspirants, gubernatorial candidates, aspiring local government chairmen/persons within our local communities to make a pledge that WASH will be prioritised once they assume that office.
Currently, Nigeria is taking the lead amongst the third world nations with worst cases of open defecation, which is as a result of unavailability of decent toilets in various homes and public places.
Recent statistics says around 46 million people in Nigeria defecate in the open.
Nearly 60 million people in Nigeria do not have access to clean water.
29 percent of hospitals in Nigeria do not have access to clean water. Just imagine!
Almost 160 million people in Nigeria do not even understand the importance of having their hands washed with soap and water regularly let alone placing a demand for the facility to be built.
In Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, 46 percent of all public schools do not have decent toilets or clean water.
This time we must not stand aloof and watch things grow from bad to worst. Tell the political aspirants around you to make a vow that water and sanitation crisis will become a thing of the past before he can earn your vote so that you, your family and the Nigeria at large can begin to reap the dividends of democracy right from now while we also hold them accountable for their inactions and inability to redeem these pledges.
