Every 11th October is the International Day of the Girl Child. It is commemorated all over the world to align with the struggles, challenges and difficulties that the girl child particularly the African girl child faces.
A non-governmental organisation African Focus For Youth Development (AFFYD) Kano, with support from Youthub Africa, brought together students, activists, CSO coalitions, media and other stakeholders and did a peaceful rally/walk from Sokoto Road to Kano State House of Assembly to commemorate the day.
The peaceful walk to the Kano State House of Assembly was to demand that all girls deserve at least 12 years of free and quality education and to also encourage the House to sign into law the African Child Protection Bill.
The rally participants were received at the Kano House of Assembly by two delegates who welcomes the participants and also said they would convey their demands to the House during the next plenary session.
While addressing the media after the rally/walk, the Executive Director of African Focus For Youth Development (AFFYD) Amb Emmanuel GABARI, thanked everyone who supported and turned up for the rally/walk. He said when “when we empower girls and support their dreams, they will grow up to be better citizens and contribute in the economic and social growth of our nation. Most importantly, girls’ empowerment will help immensely in Countering Voilent Extremism (CVE)”.
