UNESCO, UNAOC Celebrate Media and Information Literacy Week in Abuja

22 – 28 June has been endorsed by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)  as 2015 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) week. MIL recognizes the primary role of information and media in our everyday lives – the use of mobile phones, social media, Facebook, twitter, Instagram, internet. This year MIL was celebrated with an ultimate objective that would afford every citizen the opportunity to promote diversity, pluralism, inter-cultural dialogue and equality and also to draw attention to how MIL empowers citizens. 

According to UNESCO Regional Director Benoit Sossou, he said this year MIL celebration is targeted at empowering the Nigerian populace particularly young ones through media and Information literacy which is an important pre-requisite for fostering equitable access to information, knowledge, promoting free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.

Global Youth Ambassador representative Mr Dayo Akindolani, shared the experiences of World At School project that has helped more 2,00,000 kids across the globe back to school through the signing of World at School petition forms. 2015 MIL week event which took place today in Abuja was put together by UNESCO in collaboration with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the Global Alliance for Partnerships (GAPMIL).
